It’s been over a month since I start a new life in Canggu, Bali. Much like when I was staying in Ubud, my days is filled with restaurants, bars, cafes hopping & socializing. I find some have excellent food, while others have nice interior design and ambiance but their food is just okay. For you who are wanting to taste the culinary scene in Canggu, or looking for recommendations on which restaurants in Canggu are worth visiting (since Bali will be reopened soon), here are my two cents based on my own experience :
- Bottega Italiana
I came to Bottega Italiana because a friend recommended to me one of the restaurants in Canggu has the best Italian food. That’s true tho. I really enjoyed their Tagliatelle pesto and baby spinach. The food tasted fresh and the baby spinach was even crispy. The quality of the food makes me curious about how they make it and I’d like to learn how to cook it since my cooking skill is so so so….basic hahaha.

Bottega Italiana has several outlets all around southern Bali (Seminyak, Petitenget, Berawa, Canggu, and Pererenan). It serves gourmet Italian home-cooking using fresh ingredients, classic recipes, and artisanal techniques that have been around for hundreds of years. The one I visited is in Berawa. When I went there it didn’t have any promotion at all, but you could check out their Facebook page or Instagram for more info.

2. Manggis in Canggu

Manggis caught my eyes since I passed the corner of Berawa one day. I then came here almost every day since I was hooked by its setting. The vegan restaurant has an indoor seating area and a large outdoor terrace that is surrounded by a variety of tropical plants. The outdoor terrace area and the use of natural materials such as recycled wood and bamboo are the things that pulled me the most to this restaurant in Canggu. It looks natural, shady, and serene. Soon, I find myself becoming a regular customer of Manggis.

Most of the time I came here to work (so do most people here) and enjoying their vegan cappuccino. I once tried Manggis coffee which is mixed between almond milk and some other milk. But I don’t like the taste. Cappuccino with cashew milk taste better, thus I ordered it whenever I came. Manggis in Canggu is a plant-based restaurant, although I am not a vegan nor vegetarian, I love hanging out and working at this restaurant until I forget that I have an office at Outpost.

Another food I’ve tried in restaurants in Canggu is the Green soup which is consists of creamy broccoli, English spinach soup, tempeh & cashew crumble, coconut cream, and herb focaccia bread.

3. Indigo

One of the restaurants in Canggu is rather fancy and formal for Bali standard. I was curious about its contemporary interior and exterior, looks a bit different than the surrounding restaurants in Canggu. Indigo offers contemporary Japanese fusion with a slight European influence. The restaurant is owned by a French while the chef de cuisine is from Japan, chef Morita Shigehiko-shi.

I like their service. We didn’t have a reservation at that time but then they let us sit inside since we refused to be seated in the bar area. I must say that their maki and sushi are just okay, but not bad. Also, the portion is a bit too small compared to other Japanese restaurants so I had to order 2 portions for dinner. But overall, it’s still a nice experience to have a fine dining in Canggu.

4. Da Romeo

One of the restaurants in Canggu I visited just because I was curious why people came to this restaurant. Da Romeo has a nice decoration and pleasant atmosphere, also I like that their staff is attentive to customers. In Da Romeo, I found Fettuccine Alfredo for the first time outside of the US. Although it doesn’t taste exactly as I had before, it’s still nice.

Fettuccine Alfredo is originally from Rome, Italy, and is generally considered as home cooking. It eventually spread to the US and remains popular, even associated with US national cuisine. The commercialized version is known with heavy cream and garnished with chicken, shrimp, or other ingredients.

I’ve also tried escargots in Da Romeo which taste pretty good. Overall, Da Romeo is a nice place to have conversations with friends and taste some Italian cuisine (vegan menu is also available). But I would still prefer Bottega Italiana for quality taste and value for money.

5. Warung Local

Warung is a typical local Indonesian restaurant that serves Indonesian home-cooking at an affordable price. Warung Local has been my favorite restaurant to go to for lunch so far. Located in Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Warung Local serves fresh vegan and non vegan food. I can taste its freshness and consistency of flavor, thus I keep return to one of the restaurants in Canggu, even though it takes 15 min from my home to reach the place.
The buffet restaurant offers several selections of food packages starts from Rp.30.000,-. You can opt between rice, brown rice, or noodle here along with meat, vegetables, and side dish.

6. Lola’s Cantina Mexicana

One of the restaurants in Canggu that is always packed with people! I don’t know why until I went to Lola on one fine evening. Lola has a nice vibe, nice music, delicious food in great portions, and affordable prices. Find your favorite burritos, tacos, and quesadillas here.

7. Ramen Hamatora

I miss some Japanese cuisine so I was excited to visit Ramen Hamatora in Batu Bolong street because it is often packed with guests. The food must be delicious right if people are flocking to the restaurant?. But when I came there and tried one of its ramen noodles, I feel disappointed with its taste, far from the taste of ramen noodles I had both in Japan and various restaurants in Jakarta.
The good thing about one of the restaurants in Canggu is it also has vegetarian ramen and you can also tasting ramen with your pet at their outdoor seats.

8. Penny Lane

Penny Lane has very nice bohemian decorations which are perfect for those who are looking for taking pics in an aesthetic restaurant for their Instagram. I like its vibe, the garden area, and the Nasi Campur I had was also pretty tasty. But, honestly, I wish it has more food selections so I didn’t have to end up eating Nasi Campur at one of the restaurants in Canggu. You would see a lot of tourists from Jakarta and Surabaya here because this restaurant is pretty well-known on Instagram.

9. Neighborhood Food

It’s one of the restaurants in Canggu that seems to be busy since early morning. I saw people had breakfast in Neighborhood Food when I had my morning walk/ run around the neighborhood. Neighborhood Food is a local eatery and coffee shop located adjacent to the bustling Berawa beach in Canggu. It has a cozy sofa at the outdoor seating, perfect for breakfast or lunch while people watching. While its interior decoration reminds me a bit of some restaurant and cafes in Hanoi, Vietnam.
I had cappuccino and avocado toast in Neighborhood Food. Definitely will be returning soon. Besides this place, you can also try Baked coffee shop, also in Berawa, for breakfast. The coffee shop is very popular among Chinese-Indonesian and becoming an Instagram pics hotspot.

10. Milano

A good place to eat and hang out. Milano is one of the restaurants in Canggu that serves Italian and Western Food. I came here for their cocktails. They have a 50% off promotion every Wednesday. It’s also great that they also have live music. Milano is located right across from the famous Finns Beach Club.
Address : Jl. Pantai Berawa, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351
Indeed, there are a lot of cool & hip restaurants in Canggu, also cafes and bars. And I still got a list of places I’d like to visit in the near future, especially Taco Casa and the Thai restaurant in Canggu. Besides restaurants in Canggu, I’ve also spent a lot of time tasting food in many places around Seminyak, Petitenget, and Batu Belig. More about this soon on this blog.
