Travel to Jogja for food? Why not? Jogja or Yogyakarta isn’t just all about Javanese culture & nature, is it?. When you’re done exploring its historical places or enjoying Jogja’s natural scenery, then it’s the right time for you to try some of its best cuisines. I’ve picked the 4 best restaurants in Jogja you could consider trying when you visit the only surviving monarchy in Indonesia. Here we go.

Warung Kopi Klotok

Yep, I know the kopi means coffee. But Kopi Klotok doesn’t only serve coffee. Their specialty foods are Indonesian home cooking such as sayur lodeh ( an Indonesian vegetable soup prepared from vegetables in coconut milk ), tempeh, omelet, and fried banana. While their specialty coffee is bitter black coffee. Warung Kopi Klotok offers a dining experience in a Javanese traditional house (Joglo) while overlooking the countryside’s scenery. You can opt to dine inside the restaurant or sitting on a floor mat facing ricefields. I love how relaxing it feels when dining in here..

The food here is served in buffet style. Guests need to queue to take the food. As the fried bananas in this restaurant are very popular, every guest can only order a maximum of 3 pieces.

If you want to taste Indonesian home cooking in one of the best restaurants in Jogja, you definitely have to try Warung Kopi Klotok. As it’s very popular among Indonesian tourists, I suggest you come not at lunchtime and during busy hours. During those times, you might have to wait to get a seat. And by the way, don’t be surprised that the bill gonna be pretty cheap, even for the Indonesian standard.

2. Mediterrania Restaurant by Kamil

Are you missing western taste? Then it’s time for you to head to Mediterrania restaurant. As suggested by its name, one of the best restaurants in Jogja serves traditional French and Mediterranian cuisines. The owner and chef, a French named Camille Massard Combe or Chef Kamil came to Jogja to visit a friend and fell in love with the city. He then decided to stay and try his luck by opening a small restaurant. Kamil, who was born and grew up in Paris, established the best restaurant in Jogja in 2012. Currently, Mediterrania is a well-known western restaurant Jogja among both locals and foreigners in Jogja.

Mediterrania is known for its Duck Confit. But whenever I come (been there for around 10 times), I always order carbonara pasta. It tastes pretty well tho. Mediterrania is located in South Jogja, around backpacker street and not too far from Kraton (the palace) and Malioboro street. Other things that make me keep returning to this restaurant are its cozy ambiance and the price also affordable. Make sure to make reservations before coming there, especially on the weekend evenings as it often gets busy.

3. The House of Raminten

Another restaurant in Jogja you need to visit is The House of Raminten. Here, you can taste Javanese traditional food in a traditional setting. Not only you will be seated in a pendopo (a large pavilion-like structure built on columns), but you will be served by staff wearing traditional dress. There are also some interesting decorations & attractions in the best restaurant in Jogja which will be adding your dining experience, such as a royal carriage which is placed on the entrance, a batik-making process in one corner, also a mini stable (and the horses as well) at the back of the restaurant.

Some cuisines you can taste here are Sego Kucing (Indonesian dish that consists of a small portion of rice with toppings, usually sambal, dried fish, and tempeh, wrapped in banana leaves), Ayam Koteka (koteka chicken), and Gudeg (a traditional Javanese cuisine made from young unripe jack fruit stewed for several hours with palm sugar and coconut milk ). The House of Raminten opens every day for 24 hours. If you plan to visit Kaliurang as well, you can also dine in their branch, The Waroeng of Raminten at Jalan Kaliurang km 15,5.

4. Milas Vegetarian Resto

The location is a bit hidden, but once you find the place, you’ll agree that it’s worth the effort. Milas, one of the best restaurants in Jogja is built as a garden restaurant. You can opt to sit at a desk chair that blends with the park or choose to sit at Saung bamboo. Milas offers a lot of selections of vegetarian food such as tempeh sandwiches, tempeh steak, satay, and Gado-Gado. The food is freshly cooked using organic ingredients and without using MSG.

It also has a shop selling organic stuff and a mini-library. Been there twice and I love it!

Jogja is definitely a nice city to visit and arguably one of the most liveable cities in Indonesia. I love spending time visiting the best restaurants in Jogja, but also enjoy exploring coffee shop there.
