A Travel Guide to Ungasan, Bali, Indonesia. Enjoying Bali’s Best Ocean Views from Majestic Clifftops

Ungasan Bali

With the increasingly crowded Canggu become the tourist hub in Bali, another area is gradually becoming more popular and becoming a hit destination since many digital nomads and tourists move to Uluwatu to live and enjoy their vacation in Bali. Meanwhile, Ungasan, Bali, a remote area that blends in with the greater Uluwatu area is also becoming more fascinating to visit. Perched on the southernmost tip of the island, Ungasan, Bali is one of the most scenic areas in Bali, offering sweeping ocean views from majestic clifftops. The area is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island, boasting pure white sand and clear blue waters. There are many things Ungasan, Bali offers us, ranging from stunning nature, cool beach clubs, unique traditional culture, and luxurious villa lifestyle.

How to Get to Ungasan, Bali?

Ungasan Bali

Located in the southeastern part of the Bukit Peninsula in the southern part of Bali, Ungasan is a great area for relaxing and surfing. It used to be a fishing village but today it has become famous as one of the tourist destinations in Bali. Tourists, long-term residents, and surfers like to stay in various exclusive resorts and luxurious clifftop villas dotted around the area.

I drove for 1 hour 25 minutes from Canggu to Ungasan, Bali last week. If you wanna go there, you can opt renting a scooter or rent a car (with or without a driver). If you wanna go from Ungasan to Seminyak, it will take around 58 minutes under normal traffic. Since now we are on high season in Bali, expect there will be some delay due to traffic jam, best is you allocate 1,5 hours to go from Seminyak to Ungasan and vice versa. Meanwhile, if you take Jalan Raya Canggu to go to Ungasan from Canggu, whether in high season or not, it will always be congested.

There is no public transport in Ungasan, Bali, so you gotta use a motorbike or car to explore the area.

Things to See & Do in Ungasan, Bali

  1. Tropical Temptation Beach Club
Ungasan Bali

It’s the first place I visit in Ungasan, Bali since we want to chill on a breezy Sunday afternoon. I’ve heard many good things about Tropical Temptation (TT) beach club from friends and acquaintances in Bali before and thought I should give it a try. Nestled on the foreshore of Melasti Beach, one of the most well-known beaches in Bali is the beach club that was built using an immersive bamboo structure. We chose to relax on one of their day beds overlooking the Melasti beach, providing uninterrupted views of Melasti’s spectacular beach.

The location of TT Beach Club itself entices me with its pristine beauty and enchanting surroundings. As I approach the beach, a sight to behold awaits me: a road intricately carved into the tall limestone cliffs. These majestic formations stand tall and proud, creating a stunning backdrop that adds a touch of grandeur to the already breathtaking beachscape. The limestone cliffs of Melasti Beach not only provide a breathtaking backdrop, but leave a deep impression upon my arrival.

TT Beach Club is not only a cool beach club that you have to visit with friends or your significant other while you’re in Ungasan, Bali. But it’s family-friendly as well. I and Adrien were basking in the awe-inspiring scenery and enjoying the groovy music from the saxophone player, when a group of kids caught our attention. They were busy playing with bubble baths at the nearby pool. Both adults and kids can relax and play at the same time.

The selection and quality of food & drinks at TT beach club made our Sunday perfect. We had a Smoked Rosemary Hibiscus cocktail & South Paradise mocktail. I love their Green Lantern, a pan-seared Tasmanian salmon served with corn chips & creamy basil pesto. It tastes savory and tender. For dessert, we had Triple Chocolate Mousse which tastes not overly sweet.

It was a well-spent Sunday in TT beach club Ungasan, Bali. I’ll come back since we are planning to stay around Jimbaran sometime soon.

2. Melasti Beach

Ungasan Bali

Melasti Beach is a stunning stretch of coastline located on the southern tip of Bali, Indonesia. The beach is a white sand beach, with blue gleaming water and a reef right off the coast. Honestly, when I first saw it, I thought it’s the most breathtaking beach in Bali.

Melasti Beach is a great place to relax, roast in the sun and dip in the waters of Bali. The beach is also a popular spot for surfing, snorkeling, and diving in Ungasan Bali. The water in Bali is always warm and inviting which makes going to Melasti Beach the perfect daytime activity.

You can find some local surf schools and rental shops on the beach if you need surfboards and are interested in taking lessons.

To enter Melasti Beach in Ungasan, Bali you need to pay an entrance fee of Rp.10.000,- per person.

Open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

3. Uluwatu Temple

Ungasan Bali

Uluwatu temple or often referred as Pura Luhur Uluwatu is the famous Balinese Hindu sea temple located in Pecatu village, Uluwatu, not far from Melasti beach and TT beach club. If you wanna see a stunning ocean views and a glimpse into Bali’s spiritual and cultural heritage, then Uluwatu temple is a must visit while exploring Ungasan, Bali.

The temple’s location on the edge of a steep cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean is significant, as it is believed to be a powerful spiritual location where the Gods can descend from heaven to earth. According to Balinese mythology, Uluwatu temple is one of the nine directional temples that protect Bali from evil spirits, and it is dedicated to the spirits of the sea.

Not only you can enjoy breathtaking ocean view and learning a glimpse of Balinese culture, in Uluwatu temple you can also watch the traditional Kecak dance performance every sunset time. But be careful with the monkey that inhabiting the temple grounds since they can be very naughty.  The monkeys here are notorious for snatching visitors’ belongings, such as flip-flops, cameras, and sunglasses. They can usually be persuaded into ransoming the items for fruit, nuts, or candies, although this only encourages them to steal more. If you wanna be around a more tamed monkey, you should visit the Monkey Forest in Ubud.

Entrance fee : Rp.50.000,- ($3,5) for foreigners and Rp.30.000,- ($2) for Indonesian citizens. The entrance fee is includes a rent fee of Balinese sarong that tourist will have to wear.

4. Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park

Ungasan Bali

When you’re wandering around Ungasan, Bali you will see the tip of a majestic statue from afar. That’s Garuda Wisnu Kencana or often referred to as GWK by the locals. GWK Cultural Park is a tourist destination and attraction located at Ungasan, Bali devoted to a Hindu god, Vishnu, and his mount, a mythical bird called Garuda. The massive sculpture of the Hindu god Vishnu riding on a Garuda bird is 75 meters tall and was designed by a Balinese artist Nyoman Nuarta.

Not only you can admire the sculpture and stroll around the park, but in GWK Cultural Park you can also watch performances since it often holds cultural events, music concerts, art performances, and some important events such as the G20 Bali Summit.

I went to Ungasan, Bali for a day but then I realized it was certainly not enough time to enjoy what Ungasan, Bali offers to us. We plan to come back next month to stay in a villa in Jimbaran or in a hotel in Ungasan Bali and then explore Ungasan and Uluwatu for 3D2N. I suggest you allocate at least 3 days and 2 nights as well if you want to visit other spectacular beaches around Ungasan, Bali, and Uluwatu such as the white-sanded Pandawa Beach, Karma Kandara Beach, Suluban Beach, and one of Bali’s most famous surf spots, Padang Padang Beach.
