Those living in Bali, Indonesia for quite some time must realize that there are many stray dogs in Bali and not so many stray cats. Most dogs and cats are taken care of by people who live on the beautiful island, but we still occasionally hear about animal abuse in Bali. Yeah, it’s a sad reality. Are you one of the people who care about the Bali cats’ & dogs’ well-being and are looking for a way to help and take care of them? or, do you own pets and are looking for places to keep them healthy and safe while you’re away? I’ve summarized some recommendations of a pet clinic, pet hotel, and cat cafe in Bali for you based on my personal experience…..

  1. Villa Kitty Foundation

The easiest way to save stray cats and dogs in Bali is by adopting them from a trustworthy animal shelter in Bali. If you can’t adopt them for some reason, you can opt to donate to the shelter to help them provide food, shelter, and medication. I and Adrien visited the Villa Kitty Foundation in Ubud last year and adopted a very cute baby cat. She then became part of our family ever since.

Villa Kitty Foundation was founded by Elizabeth Henzel, an Australian who has been living in Bali for a long. In 2009, while she spent her weekend volunteering at a dog shelter, she realized that there are many dog shelters in Bali but not for cats. Hence she established the Villa Kitty Foundation, a refuge for Bali’s abandoned cats and kittens in March 2011.

“I used to volunteer at a dog foundation on weekends and I realized that they didn’t know much about cats. So my nephew, who is a veterinarian in Australia, I chatted with him and he gave me a lot of information. We ended up taking care of the kittens in that dog foundation, from 3 to 60 kittens in a matter of months. So we needed to build Villa Kitty.” Elizabeth said.

Today, it is a busy, colorful, and ordered sanctuary where the disadvantaged feline, and yes, canine residents are honored, treated, loved, and ultimately adopted. Villa Kitty is currently taking care of 429 cats and kittens. They feed, vaccinate, and sterilize them with the help of donated funds from around the world. 40 staff and 2 veterinarians work every day to make sure the cats and kittens have a happy and healthy life here. It also has a hospital or pet clinic to take care the sick cats and kittens.

If you’d like to contribute to saving cats’ lives by adopting it, you can contact them and pay a visit to the Villa Kitty, at Lohtundu, Jl. Ambarwati Banjar Tengah, Ubud, Bali from Tuesday to Sunday. or, if you’d prefer to donate, please head to their website https://www.villakitty.com/donate.

2. The Odd Cat

Pet Hotel Bali

I was looking for a pet hotel in Bali since we will be leaving Bali for a while. We then found The Odd Cat. Located in Padonan, Canggu, The Odd Cat is Bali’s first comprehensive cat center. It consists of a cat cafe Bali, a professional cat boarding hotel, an event space, a sanctuary, and a cat adoption center.

What I needed at that time was a hotel for our cat for a week. I took a standard room (or a cage) with a rate of 60,000 Rupiah/ day. The Odd Cat staff took care of our cat nicely, by giving her food (I brought enough supplies for a week) a few times a day and letting her leave the cage to mingle with other cats in the cafe area. On top of that, they also occasionally updated me about her condition through a WhatsApp group and sent some photos.

The Odd Cat Bali opened its doors in 2016 with a mission to sustainably rescue and care for abandoned cats and kittens. Since then, they have rescued over 600+ and rehomed 400+ cats and kittens. As a cat sanctuary, they have been receiving requests to rescue kittens and cats suffering from abuse, abandonment injury, and neglect every single day. Whether it’s a mama cat with her kittens thrown out of an unsympathetic house or a lost kitten in the busy local wet market, they try their very best to rescue all of them. The Odd Cat then provides basic food, shelter, and veterinary care for all of the rescued cats, until a new, loving, forever home is found for them.

Owners Julie & Kevin say they adopt a strict no-kill policy. That means unlike most other shelters in the world, they do not euthanize cats for population control reasons. Thus, with limited resources and in order to keep their operation sustainable they simply cannot assist with every single request of rescue that they receive daily.

Do you wanna partake in helping an honorable cause by providing a deserving and loving home to a disadvantaged cat? If the answer is yes, you can start adopting them by following these steps. If you aren’t in a position to adopt, you still can contribute by donating, fostering, or volunteering.

One thing I like about The Odd Cat is, that I can visit it anytime to watch and play with their cute cats since it’s also opened as a cat cafe Bali. If you’d like to visit them as well, head to Banjar Kulibul Kangin, Jl. Raya Padonan, Bali. The location is a bit hidden, located in a small alley, next to a Balinese temple.

3. World of Cats

Pet Hotel Bali

Another pet hotel in Bali that I’ve tried is World of Cats. It is conveniently located in the direction of the airport, in Komplek Istana Kuta Galeria, Jl. Patih Jelantik, Kuta. Here, my cat stayed in a bigger cage (or room), was provided food and drink by the staff, and was groomed as well. Similar to The Odd Cat, the staff of World of Cats also often sent videos and photos and updated me about her condition daily. The rate is 100,000 Rupiah/ day.

4. Bali Veterinary Clinic

If you are looking for a pet clinic, I can recommend you Bali Veterinary Clinic. I went to their Pererenan clinic when my cat, Arya, got cat flu last year when we just adopted her. With their help, my cat has been recovered within 2 weeks.

Bali Veterinary Clinic has 3 branches located in Sanur, Pererenan, and Tabanan. Before visiting them, I usually consult with them first by WhatsApp. If you need immediate help with your dog or cat, head to their Pererenan clinic which is open 24/7.
